Alcohol is the substance most misused.
The number of deaths linked to excessive alcohol use has surged by 29% in just five years. This sharp increase has left numerous individuals grappling with the pain of losing a loved one.
During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, there were about 488 deaths per day in the U.S. caused by excessive drinking, which contributed to an increase in alcohol-related fatalities over a five-year period.
The potential to misuse alcohol is high, and many individuals may not realize they have an issue with alcohol because consumption is socially acceptable, and its availability has normalized its presence.
“During challenging times of stress, isolation, and grief, it can be tempting to turn to unhealthy coping mechanisms,” said Dr. Raymond Garcia, Rosecrance’s Chief Medical Officer. “Excessive drinking, in particular, can have devastating consequences on one’s life. It’s important to know that there are healthier ways to manage difficult emotions, and Rosecrance staff are here to support you in finding those strategies.”
